Chemical Peels

What can I expect from a chemical peel?

The chemical peel is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world.
Today, chemical peels are among the most popular and widely recognised methods of improving the health of the skin by removing dead skin cells and encouraging new ones to grow.
The result is fewer fine lines, a brighter complexion, improved skin tone and a more youthful appearance.

How does it work?

A chemical solution is applied to the surface of the skin. It chemically loosens dead and damaged skin cells causing exfoliation and encouraging the regeneration and rejuvenation of new skin cells.
Chemical peel depths can range from very superficial to deep, although several light depth peels can often achieve similar results to one deeper peel treatment, with less risk and a shorter recovery time.

Main indications

  • Ageing skin, fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Skin texture, which requires improvement
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Uneven skin tone

Chemical Peels FAQs

What happens during the appointment?

The treatment takes about 50 minutes.

Treatment steps include:

  1. The skin is cleaned and prepared for the chemical peel.
  2. A chemical solution is applied to the surface of the skin. It chemically loosens dead and damaged skin cells. The type of peel chosen is based on your skin needs and discussed in our consultation before treatment.
  3. The treatment will be completed with a medical grade face mask to help calm any inflammation of the skin and then SPF cream is applied to finish.
How might my skin react to treatment?
  • Redness and flushing-any redness should decrease over the following 1-8 hours.
  • Dryness, tightening
  • Tingling, itching
  • Tenderness
  • Stinging
  • Light peeling
How many treatments will I need?

I will usually prescribe a course of 4-6 treatments, spaced 2 weeks apart. To maintain results, 1 treatment can be carried out every 6-8 weeks or if necessary a course of 4-6 treatments every 4-6 months.

What are the precautions I will need to take after treatment?
  • The skin may peel or flake, but refrain from touching, picking or pulling at this as it may compromise results.
  • Skin can be cleansed with a gentle cleanser with warm water.
  • Avoid facial products containing fragrance for 5-7 days after treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure, sunbeds, steam baths and hot showers for 24 hours.

Further advice will be given at your appointment.

What might prevent suitability for treatment?
  • Active cold sores, herpes simplex in the area to be treated.
  • History of radiation therapy within the application area.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Active eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, if inflamed skin at the time of treatment-but fine to treat if completely resolved.
  • Inflammatory acne within the application area-but it’s fine when inflammation has subsided.
  • Oral retinoids used within the 6 months before treatment.

Further advice will be given at your consultation.
